Phillip Island South Coast Communities Community Plan

The Phillip Island South Coast Communities Community Planning Group and its project working groups are working hard to achieve the goals of the Phillip Island South Coast Communities - Community Plan (PDF 1MB). The communities involved include Smiths Beach, Sunderland Bay, Sunset Strip and Surf Beach.

From each of the three main action areas identified in the Plan, the group chose one project to work on in 2011. Each of these projects were successful:

  • Environment protection - the Planning Group, in partnership with Phillip Island Landcare, planted the waterway at Sunset Strip Park using local indigenous plants. This was financed with a grant from Melbourne Water and will improve the water quality in this catchment area.
  • Community focal point - as a result of the Planning Group applying to Council, approval was given to establish a management committee to plan the development of the Surf Beach Community Park in Glen Street. The committee is working with the community to create a community park for all to enjoy.
  • Shared pathways - the Planning Group partnered with Council to construct a shared pathway along Beachcomer Avenue, Smiths Beach. This provides residents with easy access to their local beach.
