Anderson Road Boat Ramp - Boating Action Plan

In September 2009, Council endorsed the 'Anderson Road Boat Ramp Boating Action Plan' after considering submissions received to the draft Plan.

The following options were identified and have or are being actioned:

  1. Preparation of plans, specifications, investigations and gained the necessary permits and implement works to improve the grade of the ramp, extend the end of the ramp to below low water and improve the surface of the ramp.
    Note: Works to upgrade the boat ramp in accordance with the criteria identified in the Boating Action Plan commenced in July 2011 with completion due by October 2011.
  2. Implementation of a traffic study at the Anderson Road boat ramp over the summer and winter period to assess traffic movements, parking requirements and numbers.
    Note: A traffic count was carried out over the 2009/2010 Summer season.

The Boating Action Plan

The Boating Action Plan investigated the potential for major improvements to the recreational boating facilities at Anderson Road, Cowes and will help guide the future development of the boat ramp enabling the ramp to be used by all recreational boats and over all tides.

Construction of access to improve pedestrian safety around ramp. Medium Prepare detailed design options.
Install fish cleaning facilities. Medium Investigate the provision of fish cleaning facilities.
Dredge a channel top provide deep water access. Low Low priority due to environmental concerns relating to sand movement, seagrass and sea weed concerns.
Construction of a fixed breakwater. Low Low priority due to potential problems with sand movement and seagrass damage.

Implementation of the Boating Action Plan

Works on three of the four high priority work options to upgrade the boat ramp have now been completed.
The boat ramp now has:

  • an improved grade on both the upper and lower sections of the ramp,
  • the low end (the toe) of the ramp being well below low water, and
  • the surface of the ramp being improved to decrease the slippery affect of algae

The remaining priorities highlighted in the Boating Action Plan will be assessed for inclusion in future Council budget considerations.
