Emergency Management

Storms & Storm Damage

As a coastal community, severe storms in our local area are not uncommon and can often have a devastating impact.   In June 1993 a severe microburst was experienced in Wonthaggi and millions of dollars damage was reported.

Protection from severe storms

If you already have an emergency kit, you can use this during a severe storm, as well as taking the following steps:
  • clear (or secure) loose objects from around your yard and house
  • clean and check roof, guttering and downpipes
  • have masking tape available (for glass), plastic sheeting and large garbage bags (for rain protection)
  • listen to your local radio for information
  • shelter and secure pets and animals
  • garage or cover vehicles to avoid hail damage
  • disconnect electrical appliances from wall

During the storm:

  • avoid using the telephone
  • stay well clear of windows and shelter in the strongest part of the house (bathroom etc)
  • if outdoors, seek emergency shelter (not under trees)

After the storm:

  • check for damage to your house
  • continue to monitor your radio for information
  • contact emergency services (SES on 13 25 00) if you require assistance
  • check on your neighbours
  • beware of fallen power lines and trees, damaged buildings, etc
  • do not venture out unless you have to - stay at home and help others

If you don't have an emergency kit already - see the Emergency Kit information on this website for assistance.
